Our second year of summer phonology groups was a great success! We followed a
"cycles" approach to therapy, focusing on one sound pattern per week and
developing sounds within phonological patterns (ex: cluster reduction, velars,
final consonant deletion). The children made many gains in their speech
intelligibility as measured by pre and post-group testing results.
Each day was planned around a theme based on a particular sound
pattern. In addition, the groups were designed to have a school readiness
feel. The children followed the same schedule each time they came in for
group. The day began with large group circle time then transitioned to three
smaller group learning stations. After station time, we had snacks relating
to our theme. Next we went outside for activities, which were also based on
our theme. We finished our day with a final large group circle and reviewed
our day. Next year is already in the planning stages and promises to bring
more exciting learning opportunities!
We
would like to extend special thanks to the Kentron Foundation for providing
the funding that made our summer groups possible!
